Is your fur real?
Yes. Every coat we sell is made from genuine fox or mink fur. Each garment is examined before purchase, and if we have any doubt regarding the fur type or authenticity, we do not buy it. Only the best furs enter our collections. More sourcing details here.
Are all your coats second hand?
Yes, we specialise in second hand furs. This allows us to offer quality fur at prices greatly lower than comparable new fur coats. We believe well-made garments deserve a long life, and by extending the use of existing luxury pieces we help preserve their craftsmanship for future generations.
We also recognise that standards of animal welfare in the fur industry have serious room for improvement. Hanzo aims to promote the continued use of existing products rather than supporting the production of newly farmed fur.
These animals gave their lives to create garments of extraordinary craftsmanship. We believe the greatest respect we can show is to ensure those garments continue to be worn, appreciated and cared for, rather than forgotten or discarded.
How fast is your shipping?
We use the fastest express courier shipping with full tracking. We are experienced in conveying fur coats through even the most strict customs authorities. We prepare each shipment in accordance with the destination country's customs and import requirements. More shipping details here.
How do vintage furs compare to new furs?
Mid to late 20th century is known as the golden era of fur tailoring—master artisans building family heirlooms. Pelts harvested in peak winter for maximum underfur density, hand-stitched in seamless interweaving panels. Silk-bound iron hook fasteners. Hand-embroidered linings of breathable fabric.
But today, due to high costs and low selling prices, even high-end modern furriurs take cheap shortcuts. Polyester linings. Aluminum clips. Thinner pelts from mass-market farms. Machine-sewed 'skin-on-skin' rectangular patchwork panels, resulting in visible seams and a stiffer drape.
Will your coats fit me?
Every fur coat is unique and handmade from individually shaped pelts. Unlike mass-produced clothing, fur coats do not have standardized sizing. We don't recommend going by sizing labels in the coats (such as size 11), because they are very unreliable. The sizes (XS-XL) shown on our website are designed for Western buyers, they are:
XS = person with 32-34 inch bust
S = person with 35-37 inch bust
M = person with 38-40 inch bust
L = person with 41-43 inch bust
XL = person with 44-46 inch bust
Fur coats naturally have a relaxed fit, so the chest width is usually the area where coats fail to fit. But please always check sleeve length and shoulder width too, as these can also result in fit failure. We recommend comparing the precise coat measurements provided with a coat you already own for the most accurate fit. You can always message us if you're not sure.
Do you have Plus Size coats?
Japanese fur coats in Western XL or XXL+ are rare, simply because people in Japan are generally smaller. But Hanzo does acquire XL and oversized coats when we can.
However, rather than assume you need a Plus Size, it is worth checking your size by our classifications. Contact us with your height and maximum chest and hips circumference, and we'll tell you precisely which of our coats will fit you best.
Why do you sell from Japan?
Japan historically has had great demand for fur products. As such, there are many gorgeous coats here, and Japanese people are known to maintain the condition of vintage fur with meticulous care.
Through years of dealing in vintage garments, Akio & Kitsune Hanzō have built relationships with fur dealers all across Japan.
